Ally Micek

Foil & Epee, Age: 10

Alexandria is the club cutup at Salle Mauro. Though there’s not much she’d rather do than go to fencing, on select lazy days, she’s been known to play dead on the strip. She’s even hidden Coach Mauro Hamza’s mask in attempts to delay hard lessons.

She started fencing by watching brother Gregory and wanting to join in. “Now, my brother coaches me on strip in Dutch, hoping my opponent will not understand.”

Coach Vladimir Nazlymov, the head fencing coach for Ohio State University, conducted a fencing camp at Salle Mauro located in the West University area of Houston. The camp was held on May 28th -30th.

Coach Nazlymov is  a 3 time Olympic medalist, a 10 time world champion and also served as the U.S.A. national saber coach.  It was such a great learning opportunity that coaches from around Texas came to the camp to acquire training techniques.  The fencing seminar was geared specifically for saber and focused on preparing our Houston fencers for Summer Nationals which will be held this July in South Beach Miami.

Coach Nazlymov trained the students on conditioning, proper footwork and blade-work.  However, he specifically designed this camp around psychological preparation for the national event.  His presentation style was geared mostly for teens and older fencers although the younger fencers, as young as nine, enjoyed the physical training aspect.  The camp was such a success that Salle Mauro will be hosting another seminar in the near future.
