Rising Stars at Salle Mauro
By Marc Dudey
This season, Michael became eligible to compete in mixed foil and senior Men’s Foil events. He has already participated in the Cougar Call to Arms, Longhorn Open, Bobcat Open, Hamilton Memorial, Austin Challenge, and Battle on the Bayou. Thomas went to the same tournaments, but he was ineligible for everything except Y12 mixed foil at the Bobcat.
Before turning 13, Michael earned his C rating by winning the Call to Arms. Michael then came in third at the Hamilton Memorial in San Marcos, a B1 event. (In the semifinal, Michael’s foil broke when he was ahead 10-4. He missed the gold medal bout by one touch.). Most recently Michael placed second at the Battle on the Bayou. Also at the Battle on the Bayou, Sarah Followill, Denes Marton, and Michael formed a team of 13 year olds (in fencing age, at least). It placed second in the team foil competition.
Thomas (age 10) took the 2nd place trophy in the Bobcat’s Y12 event. Thomas had a wonderful start for the season, with a number one national ranking for Youth-10 Men’s Foil. On November 18th and 19th, he won two first place awards (Youth-10 and Youth-12 Men’s Foil) at the Houston Regional Youth Circuit tournament.
Michael and Thomas are happy about their good results, and they having a great time training and fencing.
